#166 Italy IndigoXIndigo - Dark Wash

Our inspiration for our Dark Wash actually came from a chance encounter with a customer wearing the most beautiful pair of Italy IndigoXIndigo’s that I have ever seen. He showed up at our office moving sale and by the time I made it over to him, I was already thinking about how to ask whether I could buy his jeans back. I knew I had to create this look. This wash is intended to retain the basic raw character in this saturated denim while showing you a glimpse of the wear-in that is to come.

When I first saw this customer’s denim from across the room I thought it was totally raw and unworn. It still had the deeply saturated, inky blue surface that we love about double indigo denim. As I got closer, a huge amount of subtle complexity emerged. He had been wearing this denim for about a year, but not daily and had washed it once. When I touched the fabric I could clearly tell much of the starch had been washed away, but not all, so it had this great blend of comfort while retaining its roots as a raw denim. The base color was still the deep, inky blue I love about this fabric, but the white yarn cores were just starting to make their presence known. You could see areas of grain in the thighs, knees and back pockets starting to bring out brightness in the fabric. Creases were forming in the front pockets and upper thighs and those high points took on a slightly lighter blue shade. Similar creasing behind the knees showed a wonderful tonal blue palette you wouldn’t think possible. Hems and high points had just the most subtle wear. It was just the kind of raw denim that stops you in your tracks. The colors are just so rich and varied. It’s at the stage that is gorgeous today and has even more potential in the future. Creating a wash to capture the image of these jeans I had burned in my mind took months and a combination of heat process and very careful hand work. We think the result is stunning and know you will too.
